About OLE Ghana


Open Learning Exchange (OLE) Ghana, a Ghanaian registered non-governmental organization empowers teachers to support their pupils own and enjoy their learning thus leading to improved learning, and especially reading, outcomes. We have achieved this using exciting interactive content based on the Ghana Education Service curriculum, employing very low cost robust country appropriate technology and providing timeous teacher support. We also bring to the table our many years of rich experience in education planning, education delivery, emerging pedagogy, teacher coaching, as well as integration of ICT in the teaching and learning process.

OLE Ghana works to support existing in-country and global efforts at promoting quality universal education, especially at the basic level. Its vision is to help every young person acquire, through quality education, the basic knowledge and skills necessary to become a productive and fulfilled member of the global community. It seeks therefore to guarantee every school community it works with the capability to assure quality learning for all of their children in effective innovation environments which apply information technologies and networks that facilitate learning.

Activities to Date

Since its incorporation OLE Ghana has been involved in a number of activities including but not limited to the following:

  • A Roundtable Conference in 2010 for key stakeholders in the education sector in Accra on the theme, Achieving Quality Education; making the Dream a Reality.
  • A well-attended seminar in 2010 at the Institute of Education, University of Cape Coast to disseminate the outcomes and decisions of the Roundtable
  • A UNESCO sponsored study of the Ghanaian teacher education front and the presence of Multi Grade Multi Level teaching situations in the country.
  • Piloting of the Ghana Learning Innovations Team for Education (Ghana LITE) concept in 2010 with financial support from the Danish IT society and a donation of 100 nooks from Barnes and Nobles
  • Piloting of the TeacherMate Differentiated Learning system in 2011 with help from Innovations for Learning (IFL) USA
  • Piloting of the TeacherMate Differentiated Learning system in 2011 this time using iPod Touch and with support from Edify, a USA based organization
  • Selection of OLE Ghana’s Ghana Reads innovative program in September 2012 by the All Children Reading partners made up of USAID, AusAID and World Vision as one of the 32 awardees out of over 400 entries from all over the world and given a grant to further test its effectiveness in 20 public basic schools in Ghana, document and share the findings with the international community.
  • Expansion of the Ghana Reads Program from 2014 to date with support from World Vision Ghana to 45 basic schools in 5 out of the 10 regions in Ghana
  • Provided limited Call-up technical support to the Transforming Teacher Education and Leaning (T-TEL) in 2014/15
  • Implementation of the VSO funded, and SNF supported, Teacher Empowerment through Support and Technology (TEST) pilot project in 2016/17 in 20 schools in Talensi and West Mamprusi Districts in Northern Ghana



  • Picked up an award during 2014 World Summit Awards regional initiative in Morocco in the African Content Award  m-Learning category
  • Panelist at the 2015 Global Women’s Network forum organized by the Bush Center in USA as a panelist
  • Awarded Best Company in the Application of Technology to Education at the 2017 Technology Impact Award
  • Listed in a World Bank post among 20 innovative edtech projects from around the world


Key personal

OLE Ghana’s greatest strength lies in its human expertise. The people behind the organization are highly respected professionals and are authorities in various fields across the educational sphere. A few key persons are introduced below.

Prof. Jophus Anamuah-Mensah is the Executive Chair of the organization. He has played a key role in education delivery in Ghana having served as Head of Department of Science Education, the Dean of Education and subsequently Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast in Ghana. He later joined the University of Education, Winneba as the Principal and became its first Vice Chancellor. He was instrumental in establishing the National Centre for Research into Basic Education, as well as the Centre for School and Community Science and Technology Studies.

Prof Anamuah-Mensah chaired the 2007 education reforms in Ghana and also served as Chairman of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment. Currently he is part of a panel that advises the government on educational issues. He has received a number of honours for his work in education; these include the country’s highest award civil division, the Order of the Volta Companion, and a meritorious award for championing the cause of children and education


Mrs. Valentina J. A. Bannerman a Chartered Librarian, Fellow of the Ghana Library Association, and also a member of the American Library Association is a retired University Librarian having worked as the librarian of the University of Education, Winneba for many years. She has also served as president of the Ghana Library Association, Chairperson of the Electronic Resources Group of the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Ghana (CARLIGH) and Ghana Copyright representative of the Electronic Information for Libraries- Intellectual Property (eIFL-IP). For 4 years she was the Secretary of the Standing Conference of Africa University Libraries, Western Area (SCAULWA) and once served as the Chairperson, Committee of University Librarians and their Deputies (CULD). 

Mrs. Bannerman has served on the Ghana National Media Commission, as a member of IFLA Africa Section and on the Board of Directors of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation. Her background in librarianship has been of paramount importance to OLE Ghana's quest to establish a national repository of open education resources (OERs) as the first step in achieving quality universal basic education


Mr. Peter Kaba is the Executive Secretary of Vice Chancellors Ghana, the association which brings together all the vice chancellors of the country's public universities. Mr. Kaba is also a trained lawyer having been called to the bar in Ghana. He has had stints with the state run media for a number of years in different capacities including being a regional correspondent.  Mr. Kaba's journalistic background is crucial to the PR and QUBE Advocacy activities of the organization,


Mr. Ben Eshun is currently the ICT manager of the entire ICT infrastructure and department of Central University, arguably one of the biggest and well established private universities in the country. He has worked on a number of projects with the Association of African Universities. Currently he also spends some time working on establishing the Ghanaian Research and Education Network.  Mr. Eshun provides critical advice on OLE Ghana’s technology based activities.


Mr. Kofi Essien is OLE Ghana’s Executive Director. The 2006 National Best Teacher in ICT for Education has served in various capacities in the education sector including being a senior school administrator and a classroom practitioner for seventeen years. teaching career has seen him teach in a couple of Danish schools.

Since 1999 he has worked with and trained teachers in 21st century teaching through the World Bank sponsored World Links for Development Program, the Fiankoma project (a Dfid supported project), INTEL Teach and OLE-Ghana. Mr. Essien also had a short stint with TESSA where he provided administrative support to the TESSA Executive Chair, as well as supported TESSA consortium activities including working on the TESSA newsletter. For two years he worked with the Global eSchools and Community Initiative (GeSCI), a UNICT Taskforce founded organization as its Country Program Analyst. In his capacity as a Country Program Analyst, Mr. Essien supported and worked closely with the ICT in Education Programmes Unit of the Ghanaian Ministry of Education. He partook and facilitated the development of ICT polices/plans and frame work for the country’s education system and was a key part of the panel that developed the nations ICT in education curriculum.

Mr. Essien holds a BA degree from the University of Ghana, Legon, a post graduate diploma in Education from the University of Cape Coast and a post graduate certificate in Project Management, Comparative Education and Education Research from University of Copenhagen Denmark. He holds a Masters in Information and Communication Technology in Education from the University of Cape Coast.


Mrs. Agnes Asamoah-Duodu is in charge of resource mobilization and development at OLE Ghana. She holds a Masters in Educational Administration from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana where for her thesis she worked onImproving Teacher Performance through the Integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in Teaching’.

A trained teacher, she taught for over 30 years before moving to the Ghana Education Service first as an ICT Coordinator at the National Science Resource Center and later to the ICT in Education Programmes Unit of the Ministry of Education as a deputy unit head where she played a critical role in shaping the ICT plan for the country. She later moved to the Curriculum, Research and Development Division of the Ghana Education Service where she helped develop and review ICT syllabus, develop and manage ICT Teaching and Learning Materials, research and advise on issues in ICT in Education, coordinate Intel Teach Program & Project-Based Learning, train Teachers in ICT Literacy and ICT Integration into Curriculum, facilitate 21st Century Skills and Approaches to Teaching & Learning among many others

Mrs. Asamoah-Duodu has served, and continues to serve on a number of panels and committees including Country Coordinator, International, Education and Resource  Network (iearn), Chairperson,  Panel for the development of ICT Syllabus for 2007 Education Reforms, Master Trainer, Intel Teach program, Member, Committee for the development of the draft ICT in Education Policy, Member, National Taskforce for the Review of National ICTAD Policy, Member, National ICT in Education Coordinating Committee, Member, National Planning Committee of the 2008 e-learning conference, Member, NEPAD e-Schools Initiative Implementation Committee, Member, World Bank Capacity Building Project ( Concept Design of a Computerized Resource Human Resource MIS at the MoE, GES & DEO.


Mr. Leonard Irenous Maximus Mensah is the ICT Genius of OLE Ghana. He leads in the technology development efforts of OLE and has been largely responsible for all the technological advancements made in OLE Ghana’s e-Learning platform. Mr. Mensah has worked with various institutions including Jhpiego, an international, non-profit health organization affiliated with John Hopkins University in the USA.

His capabilities include:  Creating and Managing Database such as the CouchDb, Programming in Java, C Sharp, HTML,CSS, PHP Language, Computer Repairs (Hardware), Graphic Designing, Computer Networking, Video capturing and Editing, Professional use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe After Effect, Dreamweaver and Photoshop. He holds an Advanced Diploma in Software Engineering from Aptech University College, Mumbai, India
