Ghana Reads

In 2012 Open Learning Exchange (OLE) Ghana proposed to the All Children Reading (ACR) Partners, namely USAID, AusAid and World Vision, the Ghana Reads project to demonstrate and document an approach that can accelerate literacy significantly among all of the children of Ghana. This was to involve developing, deploying and assessing the strengths as well as weaknesses of an expanded national network of low-cost digital elementary school libraries that could be scalable throughout Ghana. The Ghana Reads project had evolved over time, starting with Ghana LITE right through TeacherMate, incorporating new lessons and best practices at every turn. It is now currently OLE Ghana’s flagship programme.

Since its beginnings in 2012 when the ACR partners awarded it a grant and the programme started with 20 basic schools in Ga West in Greater Accra and Effiduase in the Ashanti Region, Ghana Reads has till date with support from World Vision Ghana been implemented in 62 schools in 5 out of the 10 regions in Ghana. It has impacted some …….pupils in some of the most deprived and hard to reach communities in the country working with some ….teachers.

The Ghana Reads programme has two key components: a coaching process and a learning platform.  The coaching process presents the opportunity for a hands-on-holding-hands approach to capacity building to be adopted as OLE Coaches seek to empower and support teachers in their classroom setting. The learning platform consists of a number of discrete yet carefully connected parts including the offline Basic eLearning Library (BeLL), the OLE Ghana Learning Management System, the Ghana Reads Tablet App and the Ghana Reads Feedback Portal which allows managers and other stakeholders to track usage of the learning system and progress being made by learners.

Ghana Reads has so far proven to be a very low cost and effective means of creating active learning environment and helping pupils develop their literacy skills. The learning platform used for Ghana Reads can also be adopted for the teaching of other subjects on the curriculum as well as for teacher professional development. Also OLE Ghana has developed various deployment models for the programme to suit technology available to schools and their needs as well.
